WHAS11’s Deener Named KY Sportcaster of the Year!

Louisville, KY – WHAS11 is proud to announce that Drew Deener of WHAS-TV and WKRD Radio has been named Sportscaster of the Year in the State of Kentucky by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. 

Deener serves as the TV Play by Play voice of UofL Football and Basketball on WHAS-TV.  He also hosts The Early Birds Morning Show (7-10am Monday thru Friday) and The Cardinal Insider (5:30pm-6:30pm Monday thru Friday) on WKRD.  

Deener will be honored at the 53rd Annual NSSA Awards Banquet on June 11, 2012 in Salisbury, NC along with National Sportscaster of the Year Dan Shulman of ESPN and National Sportswriter of the Year Joe Posnanski of Sports Illustrated.   Bob Costas of NBC Sports and John Feinstein of the Washington Post will also be inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame at the banquet.
 
Deener, 38, is the first recipient from Louisville since 2003 and joins Paul Rogers (twice), Tony Cruise (twice), Van Vance (three times), Doug Ormay, and Cawood Ledford (22 times) as former winners from the Louisville Market since the award started in 1959.
 
The Louisville native has been the play by play voice of UofL Football and basketball the past 3 seasons on WHAS-TV.  He has hosted the Early Birds on WKRD since 2008 and the Cardinal Insider since 2010.  Prior to his work in Louisville, Deener worked in Lexington for WKYT-TV, WLXG-AM, and WVLK-AM.   He is a graduate of St. Xavier High School and Transylvania University.
 
The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1959 in Salisbury, NC.  NSSA’s voting starts with a nomination process that runs from mid-October through mid-November.  Final balloting is conducted throughout the month of December, with winners notified during the first two weeks of January.
