Belo station captures morning, noon, evening, and late news time periods
PORTLAND, OR - KGW NewsChannel 8 was the number one Portland television station for news in the November 2011 Nielsen sweeps period which ended November 23. Viewers relied on KGW NewsChannel 8 throughout the month for extended breaking news coverage of Occupy Portland and severe weather leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
For the entire sweeps month, “NewsChannel 8 @ Sunrise” and the “Today” show earned the highest viewership all morning as measured by Nielsen station estimates live + same day viewing household share average from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. “NewsChannel 8 @ Noon” also won in household share for the noon-12:30 PM time period.
Evenings from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Nielsen station estimates live + same day household share average showed KGW NewsChannel 8 as the most-watched station with “NewsChannel 8 @ 5,” “NBC Nightly News,” and “NewsChannel 8 @ 6.” The station’s newest newscast, “Your Four O’clock News,” was the most-watched 4 p.m. newscast by share in all the key demos of adults 25-54, women 25-54, and men 25-54.
The only late newscast to increase share over its network lead-in, “NewsChannel 8 @ 11” grew its household share more than 30% compared to the last quarter-hour of NBC prime time programming. KGW NewsChannel 8’s late news earned the highest viewership by share in all key demographics: adults 18-49, adults 25-54, women 25-54, and men 25-54.
The station broke new ground on-air and online in its all-night coverage of the removal of the Occupy camps. At the 12:01 AM deadline on Sunday, November 13, KGW NewsChannel 8 captured nearly double the viewership of all three competitors combined in household ratings. On the same day, 130,000 unique visitors turned to KGW.com for continuous updates of the story, and the KGW.com News mobile application reached another 20,000 unique visitors.
The website logged over 85,000 views of the live stream of team coverage, annihilating the previous one-day record of 15,000 set when Greg Oden arrived in Pioneer Square. The station recently added live stream capability to its mobile application, resulting in 3,500 views on mobile phones and the iPad tablet.
At the onset of the severe weather season, the Portland Weather application set a single day record with 15,000 page views. Just three weeks into the month KGW’s mobile applications had already set an all-time monthly record of over 2.5 million page views.
“The coverage of the Occupy Portland story and the first severe weather of the season showed how consumers now turn to continuous information on multiple screens. We’re pleased with the continued trust our viewers and users put in us for accurate, up-to-the-minute journalism on every platform,” said DJ Wilson, president and general manager of the KGW Media Group.
