KING 5 General Manager Named “GM of the Year”

Broadcasting & Cable Magazine Rewards Ray Heacox for Stellar Service

SEATTLE - Broadcasting & Cable Magazine’s annual TV Best in Class has selected Seattle’s Ray Heacox as General Manager of the Year in television markets covering 1 to 25. Seattle is the 12th largest market in the country. Heacox was selected through a process that combined reader nominations with B&C’s analysis of successful stations across the country.

The magazine said success in local television in the modern age requires station leaders who “create truly compelling content—entertaining, law-changing, perhaps life-saving stuff that no one else is providing—and disseminating to users on platforms old and new” while generating revenue greater than the competition.

“Ray’s a thinker,” said Peter Diaz, Belo president of media operations. “He’s constantly thinking about our business, how it is changing, and what media companies need to change.”

Among Heacox’s achievements cited by B&C:
- successful coverage of the Summer Olympics where the station ranked among the top in the country for ratings
- several prestigious industry awards including a Peabody, two national Murrow awards and 27 regional Emmys
- the culmination of a yearlong internal project designed to keep KING content topical and timely across multiple platform screens through better efficiencies and focused story meetings
- answering the reality of a two-way conversation with the audience through today’s social media outlets and creating the station’s first full-time social media manager
- Unwavering support of the investigative team, at a time when other stations were cutting investigative budgets
- Continuing investments in award-winning local programming including a refreshed, faster-paced Evening Magazine along with New Day Northwest, Northwest Sports Tonight and Gardening with Ciscoe
- Extensive community commitment to providing food to the state’s largest food bank, Northwest Harvest, through the station’s Home Team Harvest event. The December campaign set a new all-time record for meals raised, exceeding its ambitious goal of three million, upping it to a final tally of a remarkable four million meals.

“My job is the best because I can bask in the success of the great work done by a team of outstanding professionals – the recognition should be theirs!” said Heacox.
