Campaign Turns ‘Likes’ into Water Donations benefiting community’s homeless and elderly populations

PHOENIX – KTVK 3TV and station website, azfamily.com, are putting the power of giving in the hands of their Facebook fans. On May 30th 3TV launched a community service campaign utilizing social media to gather 20,000 bottles of water for The Salvation Army’s Extreme Heat and Hydration relief efforts.  With every Facebook ‘like’ a bottle of water will be donated to the Salvation Army’s program, which is designed  to provide the valley’s homeless and elderly populations with bottled water during Arizona’s warm summer months.

Local air conditioning company, Air Conditioning by Jay, generously donated the bottled water to support the campaign. The goal is to generate enough ‘likes’ to donate 20,000 bottles of water at the station’s annual one-day bottled water drive on June 16, 2011. The campaign will be promoted on-air and online utilizing azfamily.com and 3TV's talent and station social media accounts. Updates on the water drive can be found via twitter using #3TVwater.

“We’re excited to be using our social media resources to support the community,” said Jim Carr, Director of Digital Media for 3TV and azfamily.com. “Our commitment to the community is not just what we do on-air but what we do online as well.”

During the summer months, when the National Weather Service declares an extreme heat warning, members from The Salvation Army’s Extreme Heat and Hydration Project respond by setting up hydration stations at 12 locations throughout the valley. In addition to the free standing hydration stations, Phoenix police cruisers are equipped with ice chests and bottled water to provide heat relief during their normal circulation of Phoenix. 3TV’s bottled water drive provides all the water for these efforts.

"Because of the community’s support many of our most vulnerable will have respite from the valley’s unforgiving summer heat,” said Col. Olin Hogan of The Salvation Army. “We wouldn’t be able to provide this type of relief without the support of 3TV, our partners and our generous community.”

3TV and The Salvation Army created the bottled water drive in 2007 in response to an increased number of heat-related deaths of homeless and senior citizens. This year’s Annual Bottled Water Drive will be held June 16, 2011 from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at The Salvation Army located at 2707 E. Van Buren in Phoenix. That day valley residents are encouraged to drop off bottled water to help the cause.
